Arizona and Texas added the most construction jobs between September and October while Florida and Minnesota landed on the losing end.
That’s according to the Associated General Contractors of America, which reports that the industry gained jobs in 29 states in the month-to-month tally. Year-to-year, however, only 11 states and the District of Columbia saw increases, based on data the group reviewed from the U.S. Department of Labor.
As a result, the group says the industry’s employment situation remains volatile.
“The new figures continue a nearly year-long trend of ups and downs in construction employment as the industry performs stimulus-funded work yet grapples with broad market uncertainty,” AGC said.
“Considering that most states adding construction jobs in October had shed workers in September, it is safe to say that construction employment remains volatile,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “Construction is no longer in free fall, but the industry remains fragile as improvements vary greatly by state and project type.”
While Arizona led the month-to-month increases with a gain of 4.4 percent, or 5,000 jobs, Kansas came out on top in the year-to-year comparison. Arizona was still on the plus side for the year ranking in a tie for ninth with Hawaii. The year-to-year gain was 1,500 jobs as of October 2010.
